tantric form of White Tara

paint on stucco
Western Tibet, former Kingdom of Guge, 11th-12th cent.
size: 22 x 20 cm.

Very rare fragment of a wall-painting from one of the many former temples in Western Tibet. Many of them were re-discovered in the 1980’s and 1990’s, during work on new roads and constructions of waterpipes. The most important temples of Tholing and Tsaparang were already destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

The only other example I know in a Western collection was in the collection of Giselle Croƫs, Brussels.
