Buddha Amitabha in Sukhavati
paint on textile
Tibet, late 14th cent.
size: 60 x 53 cm.
In the center sits Buddha Amitabha in his Western Paradise, Sukhavati. Beside him stand two bodhisattvas, left Avalokteshvara (white skin) and right Vajrapani (blue skin). Above Amitabha is a small figure of the Buddha of the center, Vairocana, with left Buddha Sakyamuni, and right the Buddha of Endless Life, Amitayus.
Below Amitabha, one sees left Padmasambhava and right the Green Tara, with the souls of deceased monks on small lotus flowers, hoping to come to the Western Paradise.
Below are two palace scenes, and left a small kneeling figure, probably the donor of this thangka.
In top is a row of symbols, with at the right side the Astamangala. The thangka is framed with a very nice border of trees and birds.
At the backside is a line drawing in red of a large stupa, filling almost the complete space. In the middle, behind the figure of Amitabha, the mantra `Om Ah Hum’.
The painting is in exeptional good condition – no restorations!
