Vajrasattva

paint on textile
Southeastern Tibet, 19th cent.
size: 82 x 66 cm.

In the center of the painting sits the Adi Buddha Vajrasattva, holding the vajra and ghanta. He is surrounded by rows of small depictions of himself. The style of this thangka and the colours point to the southeastern part of Tibet, bordering Bhutan.
In the lower-left corner of the painting sits a lama of the Kagyu sect, with another monk and two lay people, making offerings, with a small effigy of the Buddha of Long Life, Amitayus, above him.
